George Osborne

Dr. George F. Osborne

1950-2013
Dr. George F. Osborne of the Point/Shoreland Community passed away on Tuesday, January 8, 2013. He was born to William F. and Audra F. (McRoplus) Osborne in Toledo on February 28, 1950. He was a self employed Dentist for George F. Osborne, D.D.S. General Dentistry in Point Place for over 36 years. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity, longtime member of North Cape Yacht Club and sailed "Group Therapy" throughout his sailing career, was Past President of (2005) of Toledo Dental Society and 2013 President Elect along with Toledo Ice Yacht Club. George graduated from Start High School class of 1968 where he was a member of the National Honor Society and graduated from the University of Toledo in 1972 before continuing his education atOhio State University Dental School, graduating in 1976.

George was an active member of North Cape Yacht Club and well known and respected in the sailing world. He was a Mills Master, having sailed more than 25 Mills Trophy Races, along with more than 30 years of ILYA Bay Week regattas, Lake Erie Race Weeks, J29 and J24 national and international regattas and regular club races. He was the winner of numerous trophies but particularly proud of being awarded NCYC's Tremolino Trophy for Excellence in Preparedness in 1995. That preparedness was evident as he was honored twice for his rescue efforts of fellow sailors. George was nominated for US Sailing's national Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal for rescuing a fellow J24 sailor who was thrown overboard during extreme conditions at a regatta in Cleveland. Several other boats had sailed by the racer in distress, unable to render assistance. George and his skilled crew were able to get close enough to bring him on board. The sailor credited George and his crew with saving his life. In 2007, fellow racer Bruce Goldsmith was injured and knocked overboard during club race when a sudden storm arose on Lake Erie. The Group Therapy crew was able to pull him out of the water and then attempted to resuscitate him during the 50 minutes that it took to bring the boat safely to dock. While Mr. Goldsmith did not survive his injuries, NCYC awarded George and his crew their US Sailing Sportsmanship Award.

George not only lived the true Corinthian spirit, but by his actions and his deeds, inspired others to do so as well.

George was preceded in death by parents, and wife, Mary Lou Osborne (2009). Left to cherish his memory are loving children, Cindy (Patrick) Cassidy and Michael Osborne; granddaughter, Zandra Lou Cassidy; brother, William (Charlene) Osborne; sister, Kay (Kevin) Pool; many loving nieces and nephews including, Audra and Billy (Erika) Osborne and Nick and Ally Pool; as well as many extended 'family' members at North Cape Yacht Club.

Visitation will begin in the David R. Jasin-Hoening Funeral Home, 5300 N. Summit St., Toledo, OH 43611, (419.726.1583) on Saturday, January 12, 2013, from 2-8 p.m. and Sunday, January 13, 2013, from 1-2 p.m. with funeral services beginning at 2 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Stephen Bauerle officiating. George's infamous party in the spring of '68 will go down in Spartan history.
